Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, has approved the full implementation of the 2025 agreement between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for staff of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), with implementation scheduled to commence in January 2027.

The approval marks a significant milestone for the state-owned university, where the full implementation of the FG-ASUU agreement had remained elusive under previous administrations.

In a statement, COOU’s Public Relations Officer, Dr Harrison Madubueze, disclosed that the approval was conveyed to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kate Azuka Omenugha, through the Chairman of the University’s Governing Council, Professor Peter Onwualu.

Reacting to the development, Professor Omenugha commended Governor Soludo for fulfilling his commitment to the university community.

The Vice-Chancellor, speaking on behalf of the university management, Senate, staff and students, expressed profound gratitude to the governor, describing him as a dependable leader whose word is his bond, particularly in view of his earlier assurances on the matter.

She also appreciated the leadership of the university’s labour unions for their contributions towards achieving the development.

For years, the full implementation of the FG-ASUU agreement at COOU had been hampered by the failure of previous administrations to translate promises into action. The latest approval is therefore expected to boost staff morale and strengthen industrial harmony within the institution.

The decision also aligns with Soludo’s social agenda, which seeks to restore teaching as a profession of pride by ensuring that educators are adequately motivated and rewarded.

The governor has consistently emphasised the importance of investing in critical systems and structures to build a livable and prosperous Anambra homeland.

The implementation of the 2025 FG-ASUU agreement is seen as another step in the Soludo administration’s broader ambition to transform COOU into a university of global standing.
