The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Sector Command, has assured motorists of effective traffic management and prompt emergency response ahead of the temporary closure of the First Niger Bridge in Onitsha.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has also promised 24-hour security for the bridge, engineers and equipment throughout the repair period.
The Federal Ministry of Works announced the closure after defects, including vandalisation of bolts and nuts, were discovered during an inspection by the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi.
According to the Acting Controller of the Ministry in Anambra State, Engr. Timothy Emenike, the bridge will be closed for two weeks, from Monday, September 7, to Monday, September 21, 2026.
Motorists have been advised to use the Second Niger Bridge through Obosi towards Asaba, Delta State, and other destinations beyond.
The FRSC Sector Commander, Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno, said the Command had deployed personnel to strategic locations across Onitsha and its environs to manage traffic and ensure the safety of road users.
Asekhauno said the deployment followed a road audit conducted along major routes connecting to the Second Niger Bridge.
