The Abia State Ministry of Women Affairs has pledged support for the Women Information Network (WINET)’s campaign against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), reaffirming its commitment to protecting and empowering women and girls.

The commitment was made when WINET paid an advocacy visit to the ministry under its project, “Strengthening Women Rights Organizations for Gender-Based Violence Prevention.”

Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr. Maureen Ijeoma Aghukwa, commended WINET for its efforts in tackling GBV and promoting women’s rights. She said the ministry remains open to partnerships that align with the state’s vision of improving the welfare of women and girls.

Aghukwa noted that the administration of Governor Alex Otti has prioritised women’s empowerment through various programmes, including initiatives implemented with development partners such as the World Bank.

She also highlighted the Ahia Oma Market Women Initiative, which has trained and supported women with business items to improve their livelihoods.

She assured WINET that the outcome of the meeting would be communicated to the Wife of the Governor to explore possible areas of collaboration.

Earlier, WINET said its project, supported by the Amandla Institute for Policy and Leadership Advancement (AIPLA), aims to strengthen collaboration among stakeholders in preventing and responding to GBV.

The organisation stressed that ending violence against women requires joint efforts by government, civil society and other key stakeholders.
