A renewed sense of optimism swept through the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi, on Wednesday as the institution’s Board Chairman, Hon. Ali Bukar Dalori, paid a significant working visit that not only celebrated the hospital’s remarkable achievements but also reinforced a shared commitment to its ambitious future.

The visit, marked by a comprehensive tour of key facilities and a meeting with staff and management, underscored the growing confidence in the institution’s leadership and its transformational trajectory under the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Prof. Joseph Ugboaja.

For Dalori, what he witnessed was nothing short of impressive.

Standing before staff and management after the facility inspection, the Board Chairman expressed satisfaction with the level of development across the hospital, noting that projects he had previously seen at foundation stages during his first official visit had now been fully completed and equipped with state-of-the-art facilities.

“The projects I saw during my first working visit at the foundation level were all completed and equipped with modern equipment. I am very happy that the CMD and his management team have transformed the institution massively,” Dalori said.

His commendation reflected more than mere approval; it was a public endorsement of a leadership style that has continued to redefine healthcare delivery, infrastructure development, and institutional growth within one of Nigeria’s foremost teaching hospitals.

“I am the Board Chairman, but he is the CMD. We are working hand in hand. I am happy with him and the staff,” he added, emphasizing the synergy between the governing board and management.

A Visit Beyond Inspection

For Prof. Ugboaja, the significance of Dalori’s visit extended beyond routine oversight.

The CMD described it as a historic moment, being the Board Chairman’s first visit since his reappointment for a second tenure and coinciding with the opening of the hospital’s Administrative Block.

More importantly, he said, the visit demonstrated a genuine commitment to understanding the realities on ground and encouraging those responsible for the institution’s day-to-day operations.

According to Ugboaja, Dalori’s leadership qualities make him an invaluable ally in NAUTH’s quest for excellence.

“He is an exceptional human being, a profound leader with a strong political reach and a very successful businessman. Beyond all that, he is a generous man,” the CMD remarked.

Such endorsements reveal the growing partnership between the hospital’s leadership and governing board, a relationship many observers believe is critical to sustaining the momentum of development already visible across the institution.

Chasing a Bigger Dream

Perhaps the most striking revelation from the visit was the bold vision driving the hospital’s future.

Prof. Ugboaja disclosed that NAUTH remains firmly committed to its strategic goal of becoming one of the top three hospitals in West Africa by 2030.

However, buoyed by recent successes and growing institutional capacity, the hospital has now expanded that aspiration even further.

The new target is to position NAUTH as the leading healthcare institution in the entire West African sub-region.

It is a vision that demands not only infrastructure expansion but also robust investments in human capital, research, innovation, technology, and strategic partnerships.

The CMD believes Dalori’s support will be instrumental in accelerating that journey.

“By coming here to see things himself, he will help us in infrastructure development, collaborative efforts, human capital development initiatives, and resource mobilisation for further developmental projects,” Ugboaja said.

Turning Challenges into Opportunities

Despite the impressive progress recorded, the hospital leadership acknowledges that challenges remain.

Yet, rather than viewing obstacles as setbacks, NAUTH’s management sees them as stepping stones toward greater accomplishments.

According to the CMD, every challenge presents an opportunity to innovate, improve, and strengthen institutional capacity.

This mindset, he suggested, has become a defining characteristic of the administration’s approach to leadership and governance.

The Human Resource Philosophy Behind the Success

Beyond infrastructure and ambitious visions, Prof. Ugboaja attributed much of the hospital’s transformation to a people-centred leadership philosophy.

He explained that successful leadership requires sincerity, honesty, transparency, determination, and a clear vision.

For him, leaders must aspire to leave lasting legacies while maintaining genuine concern for the welfare of those they lead.

“As a leader, I believe the highest resource available to you is the human resource, not even the physical things you see,” he explained.

The CMD emphasized that staff welfare remains a priority because motivated employees are critical to institutional success.

“Don’t play with them. Be intentional about their welfare. Once you are intentional, they will trust you and be happy with you, “he further added.

Those words appeared to resonate strongly among staff members, many of whom have witnessed firsthand the changes that have transformed both the hospital environment and workplace culture in recent years.

A Hospital on the Rise

The atmosphere surrounding Dalori’s visit reflected an institution increasingly confident about its future.

From newly completed projects and modern medical equipment to a leadership team united around a bold vision, NAUTH appears determined to redefine what is possible in public healthcare administration.

As the hospital continues its march toward regional prominence, the partnership between its board, management, and workforce may prove to be one of its greatest strengths.

For now, the message from Wednesday’s visit was unmistakable: NAUTH is not merely growing, it is positioning itself to become a healthcare powerhouse whose influence could extend far beyond Nigeria’s borders.
