Anambra Police command investigates alleged child trafficking incident, rescues female suspect from mob action

The Anambra State Police Command has commenced an investigation into an alleged child trafficking incident in Awada, Obosi, Anambra State.

This was following the rescue of a 37-year-old female suspect, Anurika Nweme, from an angry mob by police operatives attached to Awada Divisional Headquarters at Divine Mercy Hospital, Eze-Iweka Road, Awada, Obosi.

According to eyewitness accounts, the suspect allegedly gained access to the hospital premises on the afternoon of June 23, 2026, disguised in attire resembling that of a nurse. She was reportedly observed making secret video recordings of newborn babies in the maternity ward.

When questioned by hospital staff and other persons present, she allegedly claimed to be an employee of the hospital. However, after verification, the hospital management confirmed that she was not a member of its staff.

The development raised suspicion among hospital workers and members of the public, leading to attempts by an aggrieved crowd to attack the suspect before police operatives swiftly intervened and rescued her.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga said the suspect is currently in protective custody and is assisting investigating officers with information aimed at identifying and apprehending other individuals who may be connected to the incident.

The Command assured the public that a thorough investigation is ongoing and pledged to provide further updates as the case progresses.
