The Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Health has commended the Chief Medical Director of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Awka, Dr. Maureen Uche Umeakuewulu, for introducing transformative reforms aimed at repositioning the institution.
Chairman of the Committee and member representing Aguata II Constituency, Hon. Tony Mobike, gave the commendation during a familiarization and oversight visit to the hospital.
Mobike described the ongoing changes at COOUTH as impressive and assured the hospital management of the committee’s support in addressing key challenges facing the institution.
He urged the CMD to formally present the hospital’s needs to the committee, assuring that the House would consider necessary interventions to improve healthcare delivery in the state.
“We are impressed by the transformation taking place in this hospital and will continue to support efforts aimed at building a globally competitive healthcare system in Anambra,” he said.
Responding, Dr. Umeakuewulu thanked Governor Chukwuma Soludo for the opportunity to serve and appreciated the committee for its visit and support.
She disclosed that the hospital had commenced a comprehensive digitalization programme, including plans for electronic patient records and digital payment systems to improve efficiency and service delivery.
The CMD said her administration is focused on three key areas—service delivery, research, and training—while working to upgrade infrastructure and improve patient care.
She, however, identified challenges including inadequate infrastructure, manpower shortages, staff welfare concerns, and limited dialysis facilities, calling for government support to address them.
Dr. Umeakuewulu reaffirmed her commitment to transforming COOUTH into a world-class healthcare institution capable of meeting global standards.
