FirstPower Electricity Distribution Limited (FPEDL) has warned residents and traders operating under high-tension power lines in Anambra State to vacate the areas immediately, citing serious safety risks.
Speaking during a public sensitization campaign in the Aroma and Eke Awka areas of Awka on Wednesday, the company’s Head of Health, Safety and Environment, Engr. Tosin Fadairo, said continued encroachment on power line right-of-way poses a danger to lives and electrical infrastructure.
According to him, many traders and property owners have ignored repeated warnings despite the risk of electrocution and equipment damage.
He noted that safety regulations require a minimum clearance of 5.5 metres from high-tension lines.
Fadairo said FPEDL may disconnect electricity supply to buildings linked to activities that violate the power line right-of-way if compliance is not achieved.
He added that the company has carried out several awareness campaigns and notified relevant authorities, stressing that protecting lives remains its priority.
