NUP South-East rejects parallel retirees’ association

The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) South-East Zone has rejected the registration of a parallel retirees’ body, reaffirming its loyalty to the national union led by Comrade Godwin Ikechukwu Abumisi.

The position was contained in a resolution adopted during a zonal meeting held in Awka, Anambra State, on May 15, 2026.

The union described the newly registered body, known as the National Association of Retirees of State Governments of Nigeria, as illegal and vowed to resist attempts to lure its members away from NUP.

Zonal Chairman, Comr. Anthony Ugozor, said NUP remains the only legally recognized body representing pensioners under the Trade Union Act, Cap T14 of 2024.

He also cited a National Industrial Court judgment delivered on March 25, 2026, in Suit No: NICN/AWK/19/2021, which reportedly ruled against similar efforts to create a separate retirees’ association.

The zone urged pensioners in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo states to disregard invitations from the new group and continue to channel their grievances through NUP.
