OWERRI, IMO STATE — Excitement trailed the release of six members of the Biafra Independence Movement–Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (BIM-MASSOB) from custody in Owerri.
The group confirmed that the individuals, arrested on March 7, 2026, regained freedom after meeting their bail conditions. They had been held at the Owerri Correctional Centre following their arrest by operatives of the Nigeria Police.
In a statement by the group’s Director of Information, Mazi Chris Mocha, stakeholders praised MASSOB founder, Ralph Uwazuruike, for promoting a non-violent approach to self-determination.
They reiterated that the organization remains committed to peaceful advocacy, describing dialogue and civil engagement as the most effective path forward.
The development has reignited discussions around non-violence and civil rights in Nigeria’s Southeast.
