Flood ravages homes, businesses in Nnewi

Property worth millions of naira was destroyed on Wednesday night following hours of heavy rainfall in Nnewi, Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Victims and the Anambra State Chairman of the Motorcycle Transport Welfare Association, Comrade Jude Udegbe, blamed the incident on poor drainage along the Nnobi Road axis of the Agulu–Nnewi–Okija road project.

Udegbe revealed he had earlier written to the State Commissioner for Works and copied Governor Charles Soludo, warning about inadequate and poorly connected drainage systems in the area.

Residents said the flood overflowed from GUO Motor Park to Izuchukwu Junction and worsened around Deeper Life Junction due to drainage gaps.

Affected residents recounted losses ranging from damaged homes and vehicles to destroyed goods and household items.

A trader, Mrs Mary Nwabueze, said she lost goods and a freezer worth over ₦250,000, while others reported flooded homes and ruined property.

They called on the state government and contractors to urgently fix the drainage system and assist victims. No lives were lost.
