Dr. Echezona Favour Awuzie inducted into the medical profession

Young and promising Dr. Echezonachukwu Favour Awuzie is one of the 81 medical students of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University College of Medicine (COOUCOM), MBBS Class of 2025, who were inducted into the medical profession on Tuesday, November 18, 2025.

Dignitaries from all walks of life gathered in Awka, the Anambra State capital, to celebrate with the Awuzie family over this milestone achieved.

Speaking during the celebration of thanksgiving for Dr. Favour Awuzie’s successful completion of his medical studentship, Dr. (Mrs) Chioma Irene Awuzie, mother of the medical graduand, described the young Echezona as respectful, calm and a son after her own heart.

She said, “Dr. Echezona is the second medical doctor we’re producing in my family. He is not the first – we already have one. I have two medical doctors now in my house, and I’m not regretting it; rather, I give thanks to God.

“It is not easy to train these children; especially those of them at the medical field. Sometimes, I sell what I have to pay their school fees, to make sure they keep moving. I feel fulfilled having them because, their jobs are based on empathy, healing and humanity.”

She thanked men and women who gathered from all walks of life to celebrate with her family, and prayed for God’s favour upon all.

In his own remarks, the Chief Medical Director of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Awka, Dr. Joe Akabike, who joined the family in the celebration, described Dr. Echezona Awuzie as a serious minded, vision driven young man, and said that such person will go far in life.

The CMD also commended Chief Fidelis Awuzie and his wife, Dr. Chioma Irene Awuzie, for good parenthood which he said, ensured that their son completed his program in record time.

The Hon. Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Anambra state, Mr. Don Onyenji, who was also present at the celebration, said that Dr. Echezonachukwu Awuzie, by reason of his disposition and love for the medical profession, will go places.

He prayed for the young medical graduate and urged him to aspire for greater heights.

In his own speech, Dr. Awuzie, 25, thanked his parents, Chief Fidelis and Dr. Chioma Awuzie, for their determination in ensuring that he started and completed the medical course, and finally inducted into the medical profession.

He paid special tribute to his mother, Dr. Chioma Irene Awuzie, for always standing strongly by his side in thick and thin; and promised that the good legacy his parents laid for him will not be taken for granted.

Earlier during the induction ceremony held at the Pathology Auditorium, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku Awka, the Vice Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Prof. Kate Omenugha, congratulated the inductees; saying that it is not easy to pass through the College of Medicine of the university.

In his address during the ceremony, the Provost of the College of Medicine, Professor Lawrence Ikeako, congratulated the graduands on their exceptional achievement after 6 years of rigorous study and perseverance.

He emphasized that the essence of their induction and upcoming housemanship (internship) is to prepare them for independent practice and stressed the importance of upholding patient confidentiality and the code of ethics throughout their careers.

The keynote speaker, Prof. J.I Adimma, urged the new doctors to embrace compassionate care, integrity, and professionalism.

He acknowledged the challenges within the health sector, but implored the inductees to remain resilient and contribute their skills to improving healthcare in Nigeria.

The event’s highlight was the administration of the Hippocratic Oath to the inductees. The oath signifies a lifelong commitment to upholding the highest ethical standards of medical practice and service to humanity.

The ceremony concluded with a sense of accomplishment and a commitment to upholding the values of the profession, as the new doctors prepared to embark on their professional journeys in healthcare.
