…Says security agencies closing in on kidnappers as rescue efforts intensify
Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has disclosed that pupils and teachers abducted from schools in Oriire Local Government Area remain in captivity 27 days after their kidnapping, with intelligence reports indicating that they are still being held within the expansive Old Oyo National Park.
In a statement released on Friday, the governor assured residents that security agencies were working relentlessly to secure the victims’ safe release.
Victims Still Inside Old Oyo National Park
Makinde revealed that available intelligence pointed to the abductees being held somewhere within the vast forest reserve, which spans several local government areas in the state.
According to him, the Old Oyo National Park covers approximately 2,500 square kilometres, stretching across parts of ten local government areas, making rescue operations particularly challenging.
“Intelligence reports indicate that the victims are still being held within the wider Old Oyo National Park axis, a vast expanse covering approximately 2,500 square kilometres across parts of ten local government areas in Oyo State,” the governor stated.
Difficult Terrain Hindering Rescue Operations
The governor explained that the sheer size and rugged terrain of the forest have slowed ongoing search-and-rescue efforts.
“The size and difficult terrain of the area pose significant operational challenges for security personnel, requiring patience, strategic coordination and sustained efforts to ensure a successful rescue operation,” he said.
He, however, stressed that security agencies were pursuing every credible lead and deploying all lawful measures to secure the freedom of the victims.
“Every credible lead is being pursued and every lawful measure is being deployed to secure the safe release of the abductees,” Makinde added.
Governor Urges Vigilance
Makinde called on residents to remain alert and promptly report suspicious activities through the state’s toll-free emergency lines.
He also cautioned against the spread of unverified information, warning that misinformation could jeopardize ongoing operations and undermine efforts to rescue the captives.
The governor further appealed for continued prayers and support for security agencies as they work towards ensuring the safe return of the abducted pupils and teachers to their families.
