The Anambra State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development has intensified its awareness campaign on compliance with building setbacks and urban planning regulations to promote safer and more sustainable cities.
In a statement, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Barr. Chijioke Ojukwu, explained that setbacks are mandatory minimum distances between buildings and property lines, roads, water bodies or other structures.
He said the regulations are essential for fire safety, proper ventilation, infrastructure development and traffic visibility.
Ojukwu urged property developers to consult qualified professionals or the ministry before commencing any building project to ensure compliance with approved standards.
He warned that buildings erected without permits, those encroaching on setbacks, constructed under high-tension power lines or on water channels and other unsafe locations risk demolition.
The commissioner also called on residents and stakeholders to support government efforts by encouraging developers to obtain the necessary approvals before construction.
Some built-environment professionals have described the sensitisation campaign as timely and necessary for orderly urban development.
