Minister of Works David Umahi has fired a fresh political salvo at former Anambra State governor and NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi, declaring that he is better than Obi in all indices of governance.
The Sun reports that Umahi made the claim during an inspection of the Calabar-Ebonyi-Benue-Kogi-Nasarawa-Abuja Superhighway, apparently responding to comments from some of Obi’s supporters who had questioned whether he was a match for the former Anambra governor.
The minister said he was angry over the comparison, insisting that available records would support his claim of superiority if the two men were assessed against what he described as the relevant indices of governance and family life.
“I know that I am better in all the indices of governance and family life, I am better,” Umahi said.
He recalled that he was deputy governor of Ebonyi while Obi was governor of Anambra and that both attended meetings of the South-East Governors’ Forum, which Obi chaired at the time.
Umahi also challenged Obi over his past position on IPOB and his comments concerning Nnamdi Kanu, accusing the former governor of taking a hard line against the proscribed group while adopting a different tone in more recent comments.
“He fought IPOB to a standstill,” Umahi said.
However, Umahi acknowledged that neither he nor Obi was perfect, saying: “Nobody is an angel.”
The minister subsequently turned attention to the superhighway project, directing contractors to open multiple work fronts and intensify construction, particularly on Section Two.
He ordered the contractor handling the section to open at least three work fronts and deploy adequate manpower and resources to accelerate construction despite difficult terrain, rivers and swampy areas.
Umahi also directed that no building should be demolished simply because it falls within the proposed road alignment without further technical assessment.
“My directive is that no building should be touched. Even if it’s within the alignment, I have to come and realign it,” he said.
The minister said the Federal Ministry of Works would continue to make technical adjustments to the alignment where necessary, particularly around sharp curves and built-up areas.
The inspection team disclosed that Section One, covering about 123 kilometres, had reached 39.33 per cent progress, with rigid pavement construction advancing towards Onueke Junction.
Umahi also urged voters in the South-East and other parts of the country to re-elect President Bola Tinubu in 2027, arguing that continuity was necessary for projects expected in the region to proceed.
The development places Umahi’s sweeping comparison with Obi alongside a wider political argument over governance records, infrastructure delivery and the future direction of the country ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
