The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Anambra State Command, has urged residents of riverine communities to remain vigilant and prepare to relocate to safer areas if floodwaters begin to rise.

State Commandant Maku Olatunde, through the Head of Media and Tactical Operations, SC Okadigbo Edwin, said the warning forms part of efforts to reduce the impact of flooding and other rainy-season hazards.

He noted that heavy rainfall increases the risk of flooding, erosion and building collapse, adding that the command is working with government agencies and local authorities to strengthen disaster preparedness across flood-prone areas.

The NSCDC also warned residents against dumping refuse in drains and waterways, stressing that blocked drainage channels are a major cause of flooding.

Citizens were advised to clear drains regularly, avoid building on waterways and comply with safety guidelines to protect lives and property.
