Obidike’s return as health commissioner: Revisiting bold reforms, gains

By Chinedum Treasure

The return of Dr. Afam Obidike as Anambra State Commissioner for Health has renewed focus on his past achievements in the sector under Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo.

During his previous tenure, Obidike introduced key reforms that improved access to healthcare and strengthened service delivery. Notably, the introduction of free antenatal care (ANC) and delivery services in public hospitals increased hospital-based childbirth and helped reduce maternal and infant mortality, particularly in rural communities.

He also championed a telemedicine programme, enabling residents in remote areas to consult medical professionals without travelling long distances, thereby improving early diagnosis and easing pressure on urban health facilities.

Investment in primary healthcare was another priority, with several centres upgraded and equipped to provide better community-level services.

The administration also intensified immunization campaigns and health awareness initiatives, boosting disease prevention and public participation.

Obidike further supported healthcare workforce development through training programmes, while expanding access to the state health insurance scheme to make care more affordable for low- and middle-income earners.

Upgrades to general hospitals and improvements in diagnostic and emergency services strengthened the state’s referral system, while investments in tertiary institutions enhanced specialist care and reduced the need for medical trips outside the state.

As he resumes office, expectations are high that Obidike will sustain these reforms and introduce new strategies to address emerging healthcare challenges.
