…Supporters say pledge could promote unity, political inclusion ahead of 2027
A growing number of northern political stakeholders have expressed support for Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, following his renewed commitment to serve only one term if elected president in 2027.
The supporters described the proposal as a practical step toward fostering national unity, political inclusion and regional balance in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
According to them, Obi’s one-term pledge is a confidence-building measure aimed at reassuring various regions about equitable political representation and leadership transition.
They argued that the proposal could help strengthen national consensus by providing a predictable framework for power rotation while accommodating the interests of both northern and southern political blocs.
One of Obi’s supporters, Ibrahim Hussaini Abdulkarin, said the former Anambra State governor’s reputation for prudence, accountability and consistency in public service gives many Nigerians confidence that he would honour the commitment if elected.
Support grows within Kwankwasiyya circles
The proposal is also reportedly gaining attention within sections of the Kwankwasiyya movement, where some members see it as a possible foundation for a broader political alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Supporters believe that a strategic understanding between Obi and influential northern political leaders could contribute to national cohesion and facilitate smoother leadership transitions through consensus rather than confrontation.
Speaking on the development, Kano State Coordinator of Kwankwasiyya Diaspora, Dr. Muhammad Hamisu, said many northerners regard Obi as a credible and trustworthy leader capable of fulfilling his promise.
According to him, leadership anchored on justice, fairness, inclusion and accountability remains the most viable path to national development and prosperity.
A symbol of political accommodation
Backers of the proposal further maintained that its significance goes beyond the issue of tenure, describing it as a symbol of political accommodation, national reconciliation and bridge-building across regional divides.
They expressed optimism that the initiative could help create a more inclusive political atmosphere ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly if it secures the support of influential northern leaders who share the vision of a united and equitable Nigeria.
