The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU) Branch, on Monday declared an indefinite withdrawal of services over the non-payment of the complete August 2026 salaries of its members.
The decision was reached at an emergency Congress of the union held at the university on Monday, September 7, 2026, and contained in a statement signed by the Branch Chairperson, Innocent Nnubia, and Secretary, Osita Nnajiofor.
The union said the action was in compliance with the standing resolution of the ASUU National Executive Council (NEC), which empowers branches to withdraw their services when salaries remain unpaid beyond the third day of the following month.
According to the statement, the university had yet to pay the complete August salary to all academic staff as of September 7, making the situation the third time members had experienced what it described as an “ugly and frustrating” delay in salary payment.
“The sole reason for this action is the non-payment of the complete salary of August 2026,” the union stated.
Consequently, the Congress directed all members to immediately withdraw their academic and administrative services.
It said the industrial action would remain in force until the complete August 2026 salaries were paid to all affected members.
The union also appealed to the university authorities and the Visitor of the institution, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to urgently intervene and resolve the salary crisis.
ASUU-NAU urged the authorities to not only ensure the immediate payment of the outstanding August salaries but also take steps to prevent a recurrence of what it described as an unacceptable experience.
The development could disrupt academic and administrative activities at the institution as the union’s members commence the indefinite withdrawal of their services.
