The Executive Chairman of Nnewi North Local Government Area, Hon. Echezona Anazodo, has commissioned a brand-new, fully equipped fire-fighting truck with more than 43 functional components, alongside a team of trained fire personnel, to strengthen emergency response within the Nnewi industrial community.

During a sensitization tour across Nkwo Nnewi markets and major streets, the Mayor explained that his administration had witnessed multiple fire incidents since taking office, an experience that inspired him to adopt proactive and preventive measures.

The fire-fighting personnel and their Commander
Anazodo noted that although the State Government has fire-fighting assets in Nnewi North, he considered it necessary to complement their efforts and ensure that any outbreak within the council area is swiftly contained.
“Recently, we discovered gaps in fire-fighting capacity, and we saw the need to close those gaps. Since I was elected Mayor, I have witnessed two or three fire incidents. Last year, the ‘Afia Mgbede’ market was destroyed by fire, resulting in losses worth nearly a billion naira.
” Although the fire service intervened, it wasn’t enough to fully handle the situation. That incident made us rethink our preparedness, ”he said.
He also recalled the recent fire outbreak at the Ngo Bros factory, a disaster that shocked the entire Nnewi community, destroyed property, and led to job losses.
“These incidents motivated us to take this bold step. It wasn’t convenient, but it was necessary,” he added.
According to the Mayor, the newly procured fire truck is a modern, high-capacity machine capable of responding to fires anywhere within Nnewi North. The equipment includes protective fire-proof suits, advanced hoses, safety gear, and tools capable of supporting rescue operations in multi-storey buildings.
“We brought in professional trainers from outside Anambra to train our personnel. Our firefighters are equipped and ready to respond at any moment. The truck can access all parts of Nnewi with ease, and we’ve established a reliable refilling system. While most trucks around have a 2,000-litre capacity, ours has a 5,000-litre capacity, ensuring sustained operations,” he emphasized.
Chairman of the Firefighters Team, Hon. Afamefuna Againa, commended the Mayor for the investment and assured residents of their readiness.
“We have achieved a major milestone today, thanks to the Mayor’s vision. We do not pray for fire incidents, but whenever we are called, we will respond promptly. Our emergency hotline is 08161739344,” he concluded.
