Anambra transport ministry uncovers 12 undocumented parks as digitization cracks down on leakages

By Ebuka Onyekwelu, Ph.D

The Anambra State Ministry of Transport has uncovered more than 10 previously undocumented government-owned motor parks following its ongoing digitization programme, Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Edward Ibuzo, has disclosed.

Ibuzo said the discovery was part of the ministry’s efforts to eliminate revenue leakages and improve accountability in the transport sector, noting that the previous analogue system made it difficult for government to properly track its assets and operations.

“We found out there were a lot of leakages because everything was analogue. So, we started digitization, and in that process, we found out that so many government parks were undocumented,” the Commissioner explained.

According to him, the exercise has increased the number of documented government-owned parks in the state from 40 to 52.
“From 40 government-owned parks to 52 parks owned by the government now duly documented,” Ibuzo said.

The Commissioner also disclosed that the ministry is deploying a digital identification system for park operators to tackle touting, impersonation and multiple operators working under different guises.

“We now have a digitized vest with clear identity of park operators, and they must wear the vest on duty,” he said.

Ibuzo explained that the initiative would enable the government and commuters to easily identify legitimate park operators and curb what he described as rascality within motor parks. The new identification system is expected to be deployed from Friday, October 9, 2026.

CNG, Electric Buses Coming

On the rising cost of transportation, the Commissioner disclosed plans by the state government to introduce CNG-powered and electric buses to major transit routes.

“We have a plan to bring CNG and electric buses. We are 60% gone into this and it will be launched from now till December,” Ibuzo said.

He added that the buses would provide commuters with transportation at competitive rates across major transit points in the state.

The ministry is also modernizing selected motor parks and upgrading some of them into standard transport terminals.
“We are modernizing some of our parks and upgrading them to terminals,” the Commissioner said.

Anambra Eyes Waterways Revenue

Ibuzo further disclosed that the ministry is turning its attention to Anambra’s waterways, which he said had previously generated no revenue despite the state’s extensive riverine potential.

“We had zero revenue from our waterways. So, we are digitizing our waterways and hoping to get some jetties for effective transportation around the riverine,” he said.

The initiatives, according to the Commissioner, are aimed at improving transparency, identifying transport-sector operators, modernizing infrastructure and expanding transportation options across Anambra State.
