“Nigeria sitting on keg of gunpowder”, as Bishop Ikeakor blasts politicians, security agencies over rising insecurity

By Our Correspondent

The Anglican Bishop of Amichi Diocese, Rt. Rev. Ephraim Ikeakor, has delivered a scathing assessment of Nigeria’s worsening security situation, accusing politicians of selfishness, security agencies of ineffectiveness, and the Federal Government of undermining democratic opposition.

Speaking during a pre-Synod media briefing at St. James Anglican Church, Azigbo, Anambra State, Bishop Ikeakor warned that insecurity in Nigeria and the South-East region has reached a dangerous level and should not be reduced to political gamesmanship.

“Politicians Must Tell the President the Truth”

The cleric blamed the escalating wave of insecurity across the country on what he described as the failure of political leaders to speak truth to power.

According to him, many politicians have chosen personal interests over national security concerns, preferring to remain silent rather than hold government accountable for its shortcomings.

“Security is not something to play politics with,” he insisted, urging elected officials to openly condemn policies and actions that are not serving the interests of Nigerians.

He argued that constructive criticism remains an essential ingredient for good governance and national development.

Questions Over Schoolchildren Kidnappings

Bishop Ikeakor also took a swipe at security agencies, questioning their inability to apprehend kidnappers who operate openly in broad daylight.

Referring to the kidnapping of schoolchildren and their teachers in Oyo State, the Bishop wondered how such criminals could successfully move victims without interception by security operatives.

He described the country’s security situation as “pathetic” and called for more proactive and decisive measures to protect lives and property.

“The security agencies must rise to their responsibilities. Nigerians deserve to live without fear,” he said.

Warning Against One-Party Dominance

Beyond security concerns, Bishop Ikeakor expressed fears over what he described as Nigeria’s gradual drift towards a one-party state.

He accused the Presidency of allegedly orchestrating crises within opposition political parties in a bid to weaken alternative voices ahead of future elections.

The Bishop specifically cited Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, as a major factor behind what he termed the ruling party’s unease.

According to him, efforts to destabilize opposition parties are rooted in fears about Obi’s growing political influence and popularity among Nigerians.

Diocese Shifts Focus to Medical University

On the developmental strides of the Amichi Diocese, Bishop Ikeakor revealed that plans to establish a College of Education have been suspended in favour of a more ambitious project, the establishment of a University of Medical Sciences.

He explained that the diocese believes the medical institution would make a greater contribution to educational advancement and healthcare development in the South East and Nigeria at large.

The Bishop highlighted the project as one of the major milestones achieved by the diocese as it prepares for its annual Synod.

A Call for Courage and Accountability

As the nation grapples with mounting security challenges, economic hardship and political tensions, Bishop Ikeakor urged leaders at all levels to place the interests of the people above personal gains.

He maintained that only courageous leadership, accountable governance and effective security measures can restore public confidence and safeguard Nigeria’s future.
