The President-General of Igwebuike Anam Age Grade, Engr. Samuel Onyewelu Udefi, has urged age grades in Anam and across Anambra State to move beyond social activities and become active drivers of grassroots development.
Udefi, who is also Chairman of the Umuoba Anam Development Council (UADC), Awka Branch, made the call at the 2026 Oote Anam celebration organised by Mmekoka Age Grade, Umuoba Anam, Awka Branch, in Awka.
He said the traditional age-grade system had historically contributed to community administration, infrastructure, security and welfare, but noted that many contemporary age grades were increasingly focused on social gatherings and levies.
Udefi, who is also Head of Department, Works, Awka South Local Government Area, cited Igwebuike Anam as an example of an age grade combining social cohesion with community development.
He said the group had supported education through scholarships and learning materials, provided solar-powered streetlights across Anam’s eight communities through its “Operation Light Up Anam 2023” initiative, and was planning to provide boreholes under its “Water Is Life 2026” project.
He also highlighted the group’s welfare schemes, including soft loans, livelihood support and assistance with members’ medical expenses.
Udefi urged age grades to adopt structured development plans, establish transparent development funds, strengthen digital and diaspora networks, and partner with town unions, churches and government institutions.
He proposed that each age grade should adopt a three-year development plan with at least one flagship project. For Mmekoka’s Awka Branch, he suggested sponsoring at least 10 students annually, supporting the Umuoba Health Centre and establishing mentorship programmes for youths.
Earlier, Mmekoka leaders said the celebration was also an opportunity to discuss ways the association could contribute more meaningfully to community development.
The Chairman of the age grade, Hon. Uchenna Anizor, commended Udefi’s initiatives, while Comrade Samuel Onyeachonam Iveatu pledged support for repositioning Mmekoka as a development-oriented association.
The event featured the unveiling of Mmekoka’s official muffler, decoration of members, as well as cultural and musical performances.
