The Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Prof. Ugochukwu Anyaehie, has said doctors who continue to practise in Nigeria despite the growing wave of migration abroad deserve recognition and praise.
Speaking at the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) 2026 Annual General Meeting, Scientific Conference and 6th Emeritus Professor Festus Aghagbo Nwako Memorial Lecture in Nnewi, Anyaehie described Nigerian doctors as highly skilled professionals committed to quality healthcare.
He dismissed claims that doctors are generally rude to patients, noting that while a few may fall short, professional disciplinary mechanisms exist to address misconduct.
According to him, doctors who remain in Nigeria despite better opportunities abroad should be applauded for their dedication, adding that recent improvements in welfare by government are helping to retain medical personnel.
Anyaehie, who received an award at the event, described the honour from the NMA as a significant recognition that would inspire him to do more.
Earlier, Anambra NMA Chairman, Dr. Princeston Okam, said the conference provided a platform to discuss challenges facing doctors and the healthcare sector, while recognising individuals for outstanding service.
He also commended the Anambra State Government for improvements in healthcare infrastructure and personnel recruitment.
Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Dr. Nnaedozie Obiegbu, expressed concern over the rising brain drain in the health sector, urging stakeholders to adopt practical measures to protect and retain the country’s medical workforce.
