Uganda’s Aziz Abdul, grandson of former Ugandan military ruler Idi Amin, has been disqualified from the Commonwealth Games boxing tournament after headbutting his English opponent during their super-heavyweight quarter-final clash in Glasgow.
Aziz, who had declared before the competition that he hoped to become the “new king of Scotland” in reference to his grandfather’s infamous 1976 self-proclamation, endured a difficult contest against England’s Damar Thomas.
Vanguard reports that the Ugandan boxer showed flashes of power in the opening round but was later given a standing count after being caught by a sharp left hand from Thomas.
His frustrations grew in the second round as he was penalised for repeatedly punching his opponent after the referee had separated both fighters.
With the bout slipping away, Aziz was disqualified midway through the final round after headbutting Thomas on the chin, drawing boos from spectators.
Reacting after the contest, Aziz criticised the referee’s decision, insisting it was unfair.
“This referee’s decision is not right and I am not happy. Of course it’s unfair. When you watch the previous fights of England, their boxers create a lot of fouls,” he said.
The disqualification brought an abrupt end to Aziz Abdul’s campaign for Commonwealth Games boxing glory.
