Medicine emerges champions at UNIZIK maiden pre-med football tournament

The Department of Medicine has emerged champions of the maiden Pre-Med Football Tournament organised by the Pre-Medical Programmes Unit of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, after defeating Environmental Health Science in a penalty shootout following a goalless final.


The four-week tournament, which featured students from 12 Pre-Medical departments, was introduced to promote sportsmanship, teamwork, physical fitness and unity among future healthcare professionals.


Coordinator of the Pre-Medical Programmes Unit, Prof. Ebere Yvonne Nwamaka Ihegihu, thanked the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Anyaehie, for supporting the initiative, describing the competition as part of the university’s commitment to holistic education and student development.

She also announced that every participant would receive a Certificate of Participation in recognition of their commitment and sportsmanship.


Earlier, Forensic Science defeated Pharmacy 1-0 to finish third, while the grand finale featured a cultural dance performance that entertained guests before the championship match.


Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Paul Okolie commended the organisers for establishing a programme that complements academic excellence with physical and social development.
The event attracted university officials, faculty leaders, former Pre-Med coordinators and other distinguished guests, and concluded with the presentation of trophies, medals and awards to Medicine as champions, Environmental Health Science as runners-up and Forensic Science as the third-place team.
