The directive placing the Archbishop of the Province of the Niger, Most Rev. Alexander Ibezim, on six months’ leave has sparked widespread online reactions, raising questions about accountability, ecclesiastical authority and due process within the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion).
According to reports, the Primate, Most Rev. Henry Ndukuba, directed Ibezim to hand over his responsibilities to the Bishop of Aguata, Rt. Rev. Samuel Ezeofor, who will oversee the Diocese of Awka and coordinate the Province of the Niger during his absence.
Although the development has been widely described as a suspension, the Primate reportedly clarified that the decision was an administrative measure to facilitate an impartial investigation, rather than a disciplinary sanction.
The controversy has drawn attention to allegations involving church property valued at more than ₦2 billion, alongside administrative disputes reportedly examined by a church visitation team.
However, the allegations should not be treated as established facts until the investigation is concluded and the relevant evidence is assessed.
The development raises important questions about the management of church assets, the transparency of internal investigations and the extent to which senior church officials are subject to institutional oversight.
While the Primate’s intervention may help prevent a leadership vacuum and allow the investigation to proceed, its credibility will ultimately depend on whether established church procedures are followed and Ibezim is given a fair opportunity to respond to the allegations.
Ezeofor also faces the challenge of maintaining unity among the clergy and congregations while ensuring continuity in the administration of the diocese and province.
The church must balance two essential responsibilities: investigating credible allegations of wrongdoing and protecting the rights and reputation of a leader who has not been conclusively found culpable.
Ultimately, the outcome of the investigation will determine whether the intervention strengthens confidence in Anglican governance or deepens existing divisions.
The matter is therefore more than a leadership controversy. It is a test of the Church of Nigeria’s commitment to accountability, transparency and due process.
