Tension erupted in Ilesa, Osun State, on Saturday as gunshots reportedly disrupted an APC rally, leaving four persons injured and prompting the arrest of the state Commissioner for Environment, Mayowa Adejoorin.
Among those injured was a 14-year-old boy, identified as Ilesanmi, who was reportedly hit in the thigh by a stray bullet while at his mother’s shop.
Police spokesman, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, according to Vanguard, confirmed the commissioner’s arrest, saying officers moved to the scene, cordoned off the area and recovered exhibits, including spent cartridges and Amotekun personnel caps.
He said Adejoorin was taken to the police command for questioning as investigations continue.
But the Imole Campaign Council, backing Governor Ademola Adeleke, condemned the arrest, alleging political intimidation and demanding the commissioner’s immediate release.
The council also called on Inspector-General of Police, Tunde Disu, to intervene, alleging that arrests of Accord leaders in Ijesaland were part of efforts to weaken the party ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
