Stakeholders in Anambra’s agricultural sector have urged the state government to intensify support for farmers ahead of the 2026 farming season to boost food production and security.

Speaking in Awka, they called for farmers’ training, distribution of improved crop varieties, modern farming equipment, organic fertilizers and fruit tree seedlings.

An agro input dealer, Emma Obi, appealed for urgent provision of farm inputs and credit facilities, especially for farmers in food-producing communities. He also commended the IFAD-supported Value Chain Development Programme (VCDP) for assisting cassava and rice farmers in the state.

The stakeholders warned that predicted flooding in riverine areas could threaten farmlands and advised farmers to plant early to avoid losses.

Programme Manager of the Agricultural Development Programme (ADP), Godwin Akujieze, encouraged farmers to follow the guidance of extension workers across the local government areas.

He recommended cassava varieties such as TME 419, TME 0505 and TME 0581, as well as Hybrid 2 and Hybrid 6 maize seeds for better yields.

Akujieze also urged farmers to embrace organic manure instead of chemical fertilizers, stressing that organic farming promotes healthier food production.
