The Anambra State Fire Service has urged motorists and members of the public to exercise extreme caution around accident scenes involving petroleum tankers and other hazardous materials.

The State Fire Chief, Chukwudi Chiketa, gave the warning following an accident involving a fully loaded petroleum tanker at Agu Awka Junction, beside the Revenue Office, along the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway, Awka.

Chiketa said the tanker overturned, sustaining damage and spilling some of its contents onto the roadway.
He said fire fighters responded promptly after receiving a distress call at about 10:30 p.m., securing the area and taking measures to prevent a fire outbreak or other secondary hazards.

According to him, no fire outbreak, injuries or casualties were recorded in the incident, while the exact carrying capacity of the tanker could not be immediately ascertained.

He urged motorists and residents to avoid approaching tanker accident scenes and immediately contact the Fire Service whenever such emergencies occur.
