Former President Goodluck Jonathan has stirred fresh debate over the 2027 presidential election after saying he would consult widely before deciding whether to return to the race.
Jonathan made the remark in Abuja while addressing supporters under the platform of the Coalition for Jonathan 2027, who marched to his office urging him to contest the next presidential election.
The supporters carried placards with messages calling on the former president to “save Nigeria” and immediately declare his ambition for 2027.
Responding to the crowd, Jonathan thanked the demonstrators for showing concern about the country’s future and described patriotism as essential for national development.
According to him, only patriotic citizens can build a nation, warning that people who lack commitment to their country could contribute to its decline.
The former president also encouraged young Nigerians to remain involved in the democratic process and continue advocating peaceful and credible elections.
Jonathan, however, stopped short of officially declaring his intention to contest, insisting that the presidency is a serious responsibility that requires broad consultation and careful consideration.
