The Anambra State Police Command has announced the assumption of duty of CP Nnanna Oji Ama, psc, mnips, as the new Commissioner of Police in the state.
CP Oji Ama officially took over on Monday, August 10, 2026, following the retirement of the immediate past Commissioner of Police, AIG Ikioye Orutugu, fwc, mnips, PhD, who was promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police before his retirement from the Nigeria Police Force.
The new Commissioner is a seasoned police officer with over three decades of experience in the Nigeria Police Force.
Before his deployment to Anambra, he served as Commissioner of Police, Intelligence and Training, at the Force Intelligence Department, Force Headquarters, Abuja, having previously served as Deputy Commissioner of Police in the same office.
A native of Ekata in Edda Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, CP Oji Ama holds a B.Sc. (Hons) in Psychology from the University of Jos. He joined the Nigeria Police Force as a Cadet Superintendent of Police and trained at the Police Academy, Wudil, Kano State.
His career has spanned intelligence, criminal investigation, tactical operations, administration, public relations and strategic command.
Among his previous postings were Deputy Commissioner of Police, General Investigation, FCID, Abuja; Commanding Officer, No. 44 Police Mobile Force, Force Headquarters, Abuja; Area Commander, Nnewi, Anambra State; Assistant Commissioner of Police, Homicide, FCID; Zonal CID, Zone 9, Umuahia; Commanding Officer, No. 11 PMF, Calabar; Divisional Police Officer, Asokoro and Dutse Alhaji in the FCT; Coordinator of Courses, Police Detective College, Enugu; Commanding Officer, No. 26 PMF, Uyo; Divisional Crime Officer, Sango-Otta, Ogun State; and Police Public Relations Officer, Rivers State Command.
CP Oji Ama has also attended several professional and strategic training programmes in Nigeria and abroad, including the Policy, Strategy and Leadership Course at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru; Joint Operational Planning Course conducted with the British Military Advisory and Training Team; Incident Site Commander’s Course by the British High Commission College of Policing; Tactical, Operational and Strategic Intelligence Command and Management Course; Advanced Detective Course; and various Squadron Commanders and Combat Operations Courses.
He has been recognised for professional courage and operational effectiveness, including a commendation award for uncommon bravery, courage and gallantry following the recovery of an AK-47 rifle during a shootout with armed robbers in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, in 2007.
The new Commissioner is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Nigeria Psychological Association and Nigeria Institute of Police Studies.
Speaking after assuming office, CP Oji Ama pledged to consolidate the security gains recorded in Anambra and strengthen collaboration between the Police and other security agencies, traditional institutions, community leaders, youths, women and other critical stakeholders.
He assured residents, visitors and businesses across the state of the Command’s renewed commitment to protecting lives and property, preventing and combating crime, upholding the rule of law and ensuring a safe and secure environment.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Command, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, made this known in a statement issued in Awka on Monday.
