The Anambra State Government has intensified efforts to strengthen grassroots governance by empowering community leadership to drive sustainable waste management and environmental sanitation across the state.
Speaking during a stakeholders’ engagement with Mayors and Presidents-General from Anambra North Senatorial District in Otuocha, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Vin Ezeaka, said the Soludo administration is repositioning community leadership structures to complement local government administration and improve service delivery.
He urged Mayors, traditional rulers, Presidents-General and town union leaders to work closely with the government in promoting environmental responsibility, accountability and community participation.
Commissioner for Environment, Amb. Engr. Clem Aguiyi, stressed that waste management, flooding and erosion are local challenges requiring collective action.
He called for stronger collaboration, sustained public awareness and effective enforcement, while proposing the establishment of an Anambra Emergency Trust Fund to boost environmental resilience.
Responding on behalf of the councils, the Mayors of Oyi, Ogbaru and Anambra East praised the state government’s reforms and expressed confidence that stronger partnerships among government, local councils and communities would enhance environmental governance, improve public health and position Anambra as a model for sustainable environmental management.
