The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, on Monday held a two-hour closed-door strategic meeting with the Command’s operational and strategic officers as part of intensified efforts to tackle violent crime and strengthen security across Awka and adjoining areas.
The meeting focused on reassessing intelligence and information received from members of the public, particularly in Awka, with a view to strengthening police operations, surveillance and intelligence gathering following the recent gunshot attacks that claimed two lives in the state capital.
Shortly after the meeting, CP Ama paid a condolence visit to the family of late Isaac Nwosu, popularly known as “Azia,” one of the victims of the attacks.
The Commissioner described the deceased as an asset to Anambra State, noting that he would be greatly missed by his family, the state and the Anambra State Police Command, particularly for his contributions to the Command’s security advocacy and other community-oriented activities.
The CP assured the bereaved family and residents of the state that the Police Command would pursue the matter with determination and ensure that those behind the killings are identified and brought to book.
He consequently directed the relevant operational and investigative units to intensify efforts towards identifying and apprehending the perpetrators, while urging residents to continue to have confidence in the ability and integrity of the Police to investigate the incident.
Meanwhile, the Anambra State Police Command has condemned in strong terms the gunshot attacks carried out by unidentified gunmen in Awka on Sunday, August 30, 2026, which resulted in the deaths of two persons.
According to the Command, three unidentified persons travelling in a silver-coloured Toyota Corolla reportedly shot two persons at separate locations in Awka.
Following the distress calls, police operatives immediately mobilised patrol teams to the affected areas and commenced a manhunt for the assailants.
The bodies of the victims were recovered along Capital City Road, Amaenyi, and S.M. Okeke Street, Amaikwo, Awka, respectively, and taken to a hospital where they were confirmed dead by medical personnel.
While one of the victims is yet to be identified, the second victim was identified as Isaac Nwosu, popularly known as “Azia.”
Police operatives also recovered ₦7,550, one Moniepoint ATM card and a pair of slippers from the scenes.
The Commissioner had earlier directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, for discreet and comprehensive investigation.
The Command said security operatives had also intensified patrols, surveillance and intelligence gathering across Awka and neighbouring areas in an effort to prevent further attacks and apprehend the suspects.
The Police appealed to community leaders, residents, motorists, business owners and other members of the public who may have witnessed the attacks or have credible information about the suspects, their movements or the vehicle used in the operation to come forward.
The Command assured members of the public that information supplied to the Police would be treated with utmost confidentiality.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, said community partnership remained critical to effective policing, urging residents to provide timely and credible information that could assist in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
