Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has raised concerns over a suspicious payment credited to one of his private bank accounts.
Atiku disclosed the development in a statement issued on Friday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu.
According to the statement, an individual unknown to Atiku transferred money into the account with the narration, “Contribution Electioneering Campaign.”
Atiku said neither he nor his campaign organisation solicited, authorised or had any knowledge of the payment.
He expressed concern over how the sender obtained the details of an account which he said was strictly private and whose information was not publicly available.
The former Vice President, The PUNCH reports, described the circumstances surrounding the transaction as deeply troubling, warning that the alleged breach of confidential banking information raises wider concerns about the safety of Nigerians’ financial data.
He said, “If the private banking information of a former Vice President and a leading presidential candidate can be accessed and deployed for reasons yet unknown, then no Nigerian’s financial privacy is safe.”
Atiku further expressed concern that the information could have been obtained through individuals with privileged access.
He warned that if the alleged breach is established, it could expose the account holder to security threats from criminal elements, including fraudsters and other organised criminals.
The ADC presidential candidate said security agencies and the Nigerian public had been notified of the development, which he described as part of a series of suspicious activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He urged Nigerians not to be distracted by what he described as attempts to smear his reputation as political activities intensify.
Atiku reaffirmed his commitment to providing what he described as credible leadership and practical solutions to Nigeria’s challenges.
