The Anambra State Government has directed property owners, developers and landowners to strictly comply with statutory building setbacks along highways and expressways, warning that structures erected within designated road corridors will face enforcement.
The directive was contained in a public notice issued by the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Barr. Chijioke Ojukwu, who said the move is aimed at promoting orderly urban development in line with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s vision for a safer and more livable Anambra.
According to the notice, the enforcement is backed by the Anambra State Physical Planning Regulation No. 10 of 2015, which stipulates that buildings along highways must maintain a minimum setback of six metres from the road’s right of way.
Developments on expressways are also required to observe a setback of at least 42.55 metres from the right of way or 55 metres from the median centre line.
Ojukwu urged members of the public to comply with the regulations before embarking on any construction, warning that illegal buildings, shanties and other structures within road setbacks will be removed as part of the government’s efforts to ensure safe, orderly and ustainable development across the state.
