Former National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) Managing Director, Chief George Moghalu has won the Labour Party (LP) primary in Anambra State to contest the November 8 governorship election.
He, however, admits running against Governor Soludo is not a tea party, but doable.
He assured delegates, Ndi Anambra that he would not betray their confidence.
He secured the ticket during a smooth primary election held in Awka on Saturday, defeating his sole rival, John Chuma Nwosu.
Moghalu reportedly polled 573 delegate votes, while Nwosu received 19, in a process marked by tight security and transparency. The announcement sparked wild celebrations in the over-1,000-capacity hall, with delegates and party stakeholders singing and dancing to mark his victory.
In his remarks during the free, fair, transparent primary, Moghalu acknowledged the challenge of facing incumbent Governor Charles Soludo.
He said: “The election we are going into on November 8, in the football palace is the Premier League which requires our first team. I appeal to the delegates for this primary to have the analogy in your mind before taking that decision today.”
“You have to chose a candidate that you are going to use for the main election. Running an election against an incumbent is not a tea party but it is doable and for us to do it, we must put the first foot forward. This is what I am pleading with you to put your confidence in me and I will not betray your confidence if you check my track records,” he said.
He assured both delegates and Ndi Anambra that he would not betray their trust. Moghalu outlined his mission to restore confidence lost in the current government. He said: “We are going into this election determined to change the narrative. The trajectory today is such that Anambra State needs a rejig. Our security and basic infrastructure have all failed and something has to be done.”
“I must acknowledge that there are areas they have done very well, but there is need for improvement and we will definitely do those improvements for the benefit of our people.”
“The most important and critical thing that has taken flight in the politics of Anambra is that the people have lost confidence in their government and our mission is to restore the confidence of our people in their government and that can only be possible by offering them good governance. Restore your confidence in me and I will justify it and change the narrative.”
“I appeal to you to trust me, check my political trajectory and you will see that I have never started a project I did not complete. I represent the light that will bring glory for the name of God Almighty and for the benefit of NdiAnambra,” he assured.
Moghalu, in his acceptance speech, called for unity, declaring no victor or vanquished. He urged Nwosu and his supporters to join forces to ensure LP’s success in November.
