The President of Akwuukwu Improvement Union (AIU) Women’s Wing, Inyom Akwuukwu, Mrs Sussana Nwaolili Ezeh, has appealed for support towards establishing palm oil and cassava processing plants in the community.
Ezeh made the appeal during the 2026 August Women’s Meeting held at the Women’s Hall, Akwuukwu, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
She said the proposed projects, to be established on land recently allocated to the women by the town union, would reduce the burden on women, create jobs and improve economic opportunities for families.
According to her, the women also need support for skills acquisition, vocational programmes, women empowerment, child protection, welfare of widows and vulnerable persons, as well as efforts to prevent domestic violence.
Ezeh said the union had recorded significant achievements in the past year, including promoting peace and unity, participating in Akwuukwu Cultural Day, supporting skills acquisition programmes and organising an International Women’s Day celebration.
She also disclosed that the union successfully rescued a child found with a mentally challenged woman and handed the child over to the Office of the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Child Welfare for appropriate care.
She said the women’s wing had also been successfully registered with relevant government authorities, with support from the Mayor of Idemili South, Hon. Amaka Obi.
Ezeh added that a training centre had been established in Akwuukwu through the support of Obi, with more than 150 women and youths currently receiving training in baking, hairdressing, tailoring, leather works and wig making.
She expressed appreciation to the AIU President General, Sir Udoka Ejiakor, for providing land for the proposed cottage industry, as well as individuals who supported the August meeting financially.
The Vice President of the women’s wing, Okanumee Odibeze Nwanyi, said no woman, including widows and indigent members, would be left behind with continued support and prayers.
The Mayor of Idemili South, Hon. Amaka Obi, urged the women to embrace hard work, discipline, contentment and vocational skills. She also appealed for their support for APGA candidates in the forthcoming legislative elections.
The AIU President General, Sir Udoka Ejiakor, urged the women to continue praying for peace in Akwuukwu, saying the community was facing both internal and external challenges.
Also speaking, Hon. Ezenwa Chukwudi, who represented the ADC State House of Assembly candidate for Idemili South, Hon. Chiamaka Jessie Okpala, urged mothers to properly nurture their children, describing them as pillars of the family.
Highlights of the meeting included a solidarity visit by community women leaders in Idemili South, health seminar, fashion parade, cultural dances, thanksgiving and financial address.
