ADC Judgment: Kwankwasiyya raises alarm, warns of threat to Nigeria’s democracy

The Kwankwasiyya Movement has raised the alarm over the Federal High Court judgment invalidating the David Mark-led caretaker leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), warning that persistent legal battles involving opposition parties could threaten Nigeria’s democratic space.

In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Habibu Sale Mohammed, on Thursday, November 5, 2026, the movement expressed deep concern over the judgment and its implications for opposition politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.

While acknowledging the constitutional authority of the judiciary to adjudicate disputes, Kwankwasiyya warned that prolonged court battles over party leadership and candidate nominations could weaken opposition parties’ ability to organise, build structures and prepare for credible elections.

The movement maintained that Nigeria’s democracy must be anchored on political pluralism, institutional independence, equal treatment before the law and the protection of citizens’ rights to freely associate and participate in the electoral process.

It cautioned that persistent leadership disputes and conflicting legal interpretations could undermine public confidence in the electoral process and gradually shrink the country’s democratic space.

Kwankwasiyya therefore called on the judiciary to uphold the highest standards of independence, impartiality, transparency and diligence in handling political disputes, insisting that all parties deserve fair hearings.

It further stressed that judicial decisions must be based strictly on the law, evidence presented and relevant constitutional and statutory provisions, rather than extraneous considerations.

The movement also urged the Federal Government to demonstrate an unequivocal commitment to political pluralism, warning against any action or institutional conduct capable of undermining the legitimate activities of opposition parties.

It called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to maintain strict neutrality and be guided by the law and valid court orders, without granting preferential administrative treatment to any political faction.

The movement said protecting the democratic space was essential to ensuring credible elections and sustaining public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
