Four persons have been confirmed dead while another sustained injuries in a fatal motor accident along the Awka–Enugu Expressway in Anambra State.
The crash, which occurred at about 4:31 a.m. on Monday opposite the old Government House, Awka, involved a white Toyota Camry carrying five male adults.
The vehicle was reportedly travelling at excessive speed when the driver lost control, veered off the road into a nearby drainage, rammed into a culvert and somersaulted.
Confirming the incident, the Sector Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Command, SRC Margaret Onabe, said four male adults died in the crash, while the fifth occupant sustained injuries.
Onabe disclosed that before the arrival of the FRSC rescue team, the victims had been evacuated to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Awka, where three were confirmed dead and deposited in the mortuary.
She said the fourth victim was subsequently taken to Apex Hospital, Awka, where he was also confirmed dead.
According to her, the accidented vehicle, with registration number ASB 264 AV, was recovered and towed to the FRSC Command, while personal belongings, including ₦185,300 in cash and a car key holder, were recovered.
The Sector Command expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured survivor a speedy recovery.
Onabe further said the Sector Commander, Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno, sympathised with the bereaved families and warned motorists against excessive speeding, particularly during the early hours of the morning when visibility could be significantly reduced.
She urged drivers to obey speed limits, maintain proper control of their vehicles and ensure that functional safety devices, including approved speed-limiting devices, were installed.
“Motorists are also reminded that speeding significantly reduces reaction time and increases the severity of road traffic crashes.
“All road users are therefore urged to prioritise safety and exercise maximum caution while travelling. Road safety is a shared responsibility,” she added.
