In a landmark event marking the end of nearly four decades of parallel existence, the Nnewi Youth League and Nnewi Improvement Union have officially merged to form a new unified body, the Nnewi United Development Association.

This unification aims to consolidate developmental efforts and chart a stronger course for the community’s future.

The historic merger, facilitated by the Nnewi Reconciliation Committee, was formally celebrated on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at the Anaedo Hall in Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The occasion attracted a wide array of dignitaries, traditional rulers, political leaders, and prominent sons and daughters of the town from across Nigeria and the diaspora.
Leading the traditional representation was His Royal Highness Igwe K.O.N Orizu III, Igwe of Nnewi, who was ably represented by the Crown Prince, Prince Obianefo Orizu.
Others in attendance included the Obi of Uruagu, Obi Afamefuna (Ogidi IV); Obi of Umudim, Obi Benneth Okafor (Amaukwu); Obi of Nnewichi, Obi George Onyekaba (Obidiugwu); CEO of Chicason Group, Chief Dr. Chika Okafor; Executive Chairman of Nnewi North LGA, Mayor Echezona Anazodo; Member Representing Nnewi North Constituency, Hon. Ike-Edoji; and President General of Nzuko-Ora Nnewi, Prince Jude Osumuoh.
Also present were Barr. Lotanna Okoli (SAN), who chaired the event; Chief Emma Nsoedo; Chairman of the newly formed Nnewi United Development Association, Prince Eke Obi; the Association’s Secretary, Chief Michael Azuka; Chairman of the Event Planning Committee, Prince Chukwudi Ubah; Sir Emmanuel Orji; as well as Presidents General of the four Nnewi quarters and several other notable figures.
In his address, Prince Obianefo Orizu described the event not merely as a merger but a “historic reaffirmation of purpose.” He praised the decision of the two organizations to put aside rivalry in favour of unity and development.
He recounted the foundational role of the Nnewi Youth League, established on August 10, 1948, highlighting its pivotal achievements such as attracting a post office in 1953, building the Nnewi League Hall in 1954, facilitating educational projects, constructing classroom blocks, and contributing to the development of the College of Health Sciences and mortuary services at the Nnewi General Hospital, now Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH).
Similarly, the Nnewi Improvement Union, formed in 1986, was credited with initiating several community-focused projects over the years.
“Today, the two organizations have chosen the higher path to unite under one banner — the Nnewi United Development Association,” the Crown Prince declared.
He lauded the efforts of the Reconciliation Committee and all who made the merger possible after nearly 40 years.
However, he was quick to caution that while the new association will serve as a vital platform for community development, Nzuko-Ora Nnewi remains the sole body vested with the authority to administer town union matters in Nnewi.
The Crown Prince urged members of the new association to focus on selfless service, unity, and practical community development while fostering harmony and avoiding any conflict of interest with existing institutions.
The event marked a new chapter in Nnewi’s communal history, with hopes high that the unified body will accelerate development and enhance the town’s standing both within and outside Anambra State.
