The Anglican Bishop of Aguata Diocese, Rt. Rev. Samuel Ezeofor, has expressed concern over the growing rate of idolatry among Christian youths despite the increasing number of churches.
Speaking at the maiden Aguata Diocesan Lecture Series on “Culture, Tradition and the Gospel” held at the Cathedral Church of St. John, Ekwulobia, Ezeofor blamed parents and church leaders for failing to properly guide young people.
He said the lecture was organized to help Christians understand the differences between culture, tradition, and the Gospel, urging believers to uphold godly values while preserving positive aspects of Igbo culture.
Guest lecturer, Prof. Kanayo Nwadialor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, said indigenous Igbo names and cultural practices such as the use of kola nut are not acts of idolatry when they do not contradict Christian teachings.
He encouraged Christians to preserve cultural values that promote unity and development.
Also speaking, Ven. Dr. Emmanuel Uzuegbunam of UNIZIK said many youths are returning to traditional worship because of disappointment with some practices in the modern church.
He called for sincerity, sacrifice, and a renewed Christian witness.
Chairman of the diocesan lecture committee, Ven. Dr. Steve Nnadi, said the programme was designed to deepen understanding of culture, tradition, and the Gospel for the benefit of society.
