Eleos Specialist Hospital, Abuja, has introduced Thulium Fiber Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (ThuFLEP), a modern laser procedure designed to treat enlarged prostate without making any surgical cuts on the body.
The hospital said the innovative technology completely removes an enlarged prostate, regardless of its size, while significantly reducing complications associated with conventional surgical methods.
Same-day discharge, minimal blood loss
According to the hospital, the procedure offers several advantages, including little or no blood loss, no external surgical incision, and faster recovery, allowing patients to return home on the same day or within 24 hours after treatment.
Another major benefit is that the procedure can be performed with the patient awake, while preserving erectile function after surgery.
The hospital added that the latest laser technology represents an improvement over earlier laser systems and is also effective in treating kidney stones and other urological conditions.
Over 30 successful procedures recorded
Head of Operations, Mr. Joshua Amayanvbo, disclosed that the hospital has successfully carried out ThuFLEP on more than 30 patients, with each patient discharged either the same day or the following day.
Consultant highlights benefits
Speaking during a recent interview on Arise Television’s Morning Show, Consultant Urologist and Laparoscopic Surgeon, Dr. Paul Ngwu, described ThuFLEP as a major advancement in the treatment of enlarged prostate.
According to him, the technology greatly reduces many of the complications associated with older surgical techniques.
“We’ll finish the surgery and the urine is clear. There is no bleeding, even for a very big prostate.”
He added: “You will discover that you have removed a 300g or 400g prostate, and there is no need for blood transfusion at all.”
Dr. Ngwu also stressed that the procedure does not affect a patient’s erectile function.
Creating public awareness
He explained that the objective is to increase public awareness about available treatment options rather than advertise a particular service.
“The essence of this programme is public health education. It is to create awareness so members of the public know that solutions exist and that this technology is available. A simple Google search for ThuFLEP will provide more information, and the technology is also available in some hospitals.”
