Stakeholders decry sports neglect, seek more investment in school children

Stakeholders in the education sector have called for increased investment in sports development among school children to promote talent discovery, empowerment and all-round growth.


The call was made during the 2026 Inter-house Sports Competition of Merchants of Light School (MoLS), Oba, in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State.


Speaking at the event, Alumni Liaison Officer of the school’s Old Boys Association, Chief Ako Onugha, lamented the neglect of sports in schools, describing inter-house competitions as platforms for discovering young talents who could excel nationally and internationally.


Principal of the school, Mrs Joyce Uchendu, said sports remained an important part of education, helping students discover and develop their talents while also creating future career opportunities.


Zonal Director of Education, PPSSC Ogidi Zone, Mrs Nkiru Elosiuba, urged parents, philanthropists and stakeholders to support young athletes through sponsorship and mentorship.


Also speaking, Federal House of Representatives aspirant for Idemili North and South Constituency, Dr Kene Igboebisi, described sports as a vital tool for human capital development, stressing that many children discover purpose and opportunities through sporting activities.
Chairman of the occasion, Sir Barr Felix Uzo, encouraged students to embrace healthy competition and commended the school management for reviving the inter-house sports culture.
