Superyacht linked to Russian billionaire sails through Strait of Hormuz amid tensions

A $500m (£370m) superyacht linked to Russian billionaire Alexey Mordashov has sailed through the Strait of Hormuz despite ongoing tensions and restricted maritime traffic in the region.

The 142m vessel, Nord, travelled from Dubai to Muscat over the weekend, becoming one of the few private yachts to pass through the strategic route in recent months.

Shipping activity in the Gulf has dropped sharply amid a standoff involving Iran and the United States, with the waterway handling about one-fifth of global oil and LNG supplies under normal conditions.

The yacht, reportedly registered to a company linked to Mordashov’s wife, features luxury amenities including a helipad, swimming pool and submarine.

Mordashov, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has been under Western sanctions since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

It remains unclear whether he was on board during the journey.
