COMMENTARY: Harmattan Season, A Call For Heightened Fire Safety And Preparedness In Anambra State

By David Onwuchekwa

As the harmattan season gradually sets in, residents of Anambra State are urged to exercise heightened caution in their daily activities to prevent fire incidents across residential buildings, factories, private and public facilities.

The dry, dusty and windy nature of harmattan significantly increases the risk of fire outbreaks, which can spread rapidly if not promptly contained.

At this critical period, the importance of fire safety consciousness cannot be overstated.

Residents are advised to be mindful of open flames, faulty electrical appliances, indiscriminate waste burning, and poor handling of flammable materials.

Property owners and facility managers should also ensure regular checks on electrical wiring and cooking areas, as many fire incidents are linked to avoidable negligence.

Equally important is the readiness of fire service agencies. Firefighters across the State must remain combat-ready, adequately equipped, and strategically positioned to respond swiftly to emergencies. Timely intervention often makes the difference between a minor incident and a devastating inferno that could lead to loss of lives and property.

To further strengthen fire prevention and control, there is a compelling need for a uniform by-law across the 21 local government areas of Anambra State mandating every building, residential, commercial, or public, to have a functional standby fire extinguisher.

Early response at the point of outbreak can effectively suppress fires before they escalate beyond control, especially in situations where emergency responders may face delays.

Such a preventive measure will not only promote a culture of safety and responsibility but also complement the efforts of firefighting agencies. As harmattan deepens, collective vigilance, preparedness, and enforcement of basic fire safety regulations remain essential to safeguarding lives and property across Anambra State.
