The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed claims by Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu can be defeated in the 2027 presidential election, insisting that the ruling party remains confident of retaining power.
The Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, declared that the APC would win the presidential, governorship and other elections in Kaduna State, rejecting suggestions that the party was losing support in the North.
Musa spoke on Thursday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, shortly after Obi and Kwankwaso told supporters in Port Harcourt that they were prepared to resist any attempt to manipulate the 2027 election.
Asked whether the APC could lose Kaduna State, Musa replied: “APC will win in Kaduna. That I know.”
Pressed on whether his prediction covered both the presidential and governorship elections, the minister said: “Definitely. Presidential, governorship, and all levels.”
Musa also rejected suggestions that northern voters were turning against the APC, while defending Tinubu’s economic policies.
According to him, the President had taken “very painful decisions”, arguing that the benefits of the reforms would become clearer with time.
“I can tell you, APC will win,” Musa declared.
Earlier, Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, had urged his supporters in Rivers State to remain vigilant and ensure that their votes counted in the 2027 election.
Obi warned that Nigerians would not allow their votes to be subverted at polling units, insisting that any attempt to manipulate the electoral process would be resisted.
Kwankwaso, who is expected to run alongside Obi, also cautioned against assuming that control of state governments automatically guarantees victory at the presidential level.
He cited the defeat of former President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2015 presidential election despite his incumbency as an example of how electoral fortunes can change.
The APC National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, also dismissed the opposition’s claims, describing them as “cheap talk” and “wishful thinking”.
Basiru maintained that the APC was confident Nigerians would re-elect President Tinubu in 2027.
“Presidential election is not won on empty rhetoric or wishful thinking. We are confident that Nigerians will re-elect President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he said.
The exchange signals an intensifying political contest ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the ruling APC projecting confidence while opposition figures, including Obi and Kwankwaso, seek to build a formidable challenge to Tinubu.
