The government of Abia State has announced a sweeping ban on commercial motorcycle operations, popularly known as okada, in the metropolitan areas of Umuahia, Aba and Ohafia.

The ban takes effect from Monday, June 22, 2026, according to a statement by the Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu.

The state government said the move is aimed at boosting security, improving public safety, reducing traffic congestion and creating a more organized transportation system across the affected cities.

Commercial motorcycle operators have been directed to cease operations within the designated areas, while security agencies have been mandated to enforce compliance.

Authorities warned that violators will be arrested and their motorcycles confiscated in line with existing laws.

The government called on residents and transport stakeholders to support the policy, describing it as a necessary step toward enhancing safety and development in the state.
