Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has debunked reports linking one of its lecturers to a viral video showing a university personnel allegedly caught in an inappropriate act with a student, describing the claims as false and misleading.
In a press statement issued on Thursday by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Comrade Aloysius Emeka Attah, the university said investigations revealed that neither the incident nor the individual seen in the video had any connection with the institution.
According to the statement, the alleged incident did not occur within the university, while the man featured in the viral video is not a staff member of UNIZIK.
The management further stressed that no staff or student of the university was involved in the incident in any way.
The institution reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining high standards of professionalism, ethics and discipline among its staff and students, noting that it has zero tolerance for any form of student exploitation.
UNIZIK also expressed concern over the growing spread of misinformation and disinformation through social media and citizen journalism, blaming the rush to break news and attract online traffic for the circulation of false reports.
The university urged media organisations, bloggers and members of the public to verify information before publication and called on platforms that carried the report to retract and correct the misinformation.
The statement also reiterated the university’s commitment to maintaining an open-door policy for information and communication.
