Female students of the Prof. Dora Akunyili Hostel at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, have honoured the late former Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Dora Nkem Akunyili, with a colourful ceremony celebrating her legacy of integrity, courage and selfless service.
The event brought together university officials, students, legal practitioners and other guests who described the late Akunyili as a role model whose contributions to public health and national development continue to inspire Nigerians.
Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Kingsley Ikechukwu Uboji, said the annual celebration was designed to preserve her memory while encouraging students to uphold values such as integrity, professionalism and accountability.
Representing the university Registrar, Mrs. Ilozue Perpetual Ngozi said Akunyili’s exemplary life remains a source of inspiration and reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to producing graduates known for both academic excellence and good character.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Hon. Obumneme Akunyili thanked the university for keeping his mother’s legacy alive, urging students to embrace honesty, diligence and compassion in their daily lives.
Award recipients, represented by their aides, described the recognition as a call to greater service and pledged to promote ethical leadership and youth development.
The Executive Director of the Anambra State AIDS Control Agency (ANSACA), Dr. Nkem Okeke, noted that Akunyili’s courageous fight against counterfeit drugs strengthened Nigeria’s healthcare system and enhanced the country’s global reputation.
Hostel President, Miss Promise Nwogu, assured that the annual event would continue to inspire young women to uphold integrity, patriotism and excellence.
The ceremony featured award presentations, cultural performances, the unveiling of a portrait of the late Akunyili and other activities celebrating her enduring contributions to Nigeria.
