“Real farmers sidelined”-Ozubulu farmer ….Applauds Soludo’s seed initiative, alleges politicians hijack farm inputs

A concerned farmer from Ozubulu in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State has commended the Governor Charles Soludo over the proposed distribution of hybrid seeds to farmers for the 2026 farming season, describing the initiative as timely and commendable.

The farmer, who pleaded anonymity while reacting to a publication titled: “Soludo to distribute 5,000 hybrid non-GMO seeds to farmers” by thenijasun.com on Friday, however, lamented that such agricultural interventions hardly get to genuine farmers at the grassroots.

According to him, farm inputs and seedlings distributed by government are often allegedly hijacked by middlemen and politicians, who either divert them or hand them over to individuals with no farming background.

He alleged that many of the beneficiaries eventually resell the seedlings at inflated prices to actual farmers who are ready to cultivate the land.

“Since 2024, the government has been distributing the seedlings through middlemen in my area. Politicians collect the seedlings and give them to people who are not real farmers and who do not even know what to do with them,” he said.

The farmer appealed to the state government to establish a direct distribution channel that would ensure authentic farmers benefit from the agricultural support programme.

“So the seedlings should be given directly to the real farmers. Please help us tell them that genuine farmers need to receive the seedlings directly from the government,” he pleaded.

The development has further sparked conversations among residents and stakeholders on the need for transparency and proper monitoring in the distribution of agricultural inputs across communities in the state.
